Kansas’ Darryn Peterson to miss another game because of lingering hamstring issue

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Darrin Peterson will miss another game for No. 25 Kansas this weekend with a lingering hamstring problem, Bill Self said Friday, although the Jayhawks coach added, “We don't think it's a long-term deal at all.”

The nation's top recruit and possible No. 1 overall pick in next year's NBA draft didn't make the cut. Tuesday night rout of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 77-46 after being injured during a shootout earlier in the day. He will now miss Saturday's game against Princeton.

“For some reason it still hurts and (we’re) trying to figure it out,” Self said. “As long as it's still such a wound,” he says, “and generally limits him, there's no reason to put him out there yet. That's where we are.”

The big question is whether Peterson will return for any high-profile games starting next week.

The Jayhawks will travel to New York to play No. 4 Duke on Tuesday in the Champions Classic. Next up is a trip to Las Vegas, where they are guaranteed games against Notre Dame and Syracuse at the Players Era Festival. Third-ranked UConn will visit Allen Fieldhouse on Dec. 2, and Kansas will also have games against Missouri and NC State before the start of Big 12 play.

Peterson scored 21 points in 22 minutes in his college debut against Green Bay and 22 against the Tar Heels. But he was also hampered by early-season cramp issues that limited him to half of an exhibition game against Louisville and prevented him from playing a full game in another exhibition game against Fort Hays State.

Asked if he was concerned about Peterson missing time, Self said, “Right now, a couple days later, I'm gone.”

“He practiced the day of our game on Tuesday,” Self said. “But he said it was just tight, and he still felt tight yesterday.”
