The snowy Canadian Premier League final, which included a blizzard and a daring cyclist kick, has received more than a billion views, broadcaster OneSoccer said on social media on Thursday.
Scenes from Atlético Ottawa's 2-1 win over Calgary on Sunday went viral on social media, with David Rodriguez's incredible game-clinching goal generating much of the excitement.
Soccer player David Rodriguez told The National about the moment he scored a bicycle kick into the snow, dubbed the “icicle kick,” in the Canadian Premier League final to level the score and help his Atlético Ottawa team win the championship.
As snow fell heavily at Ottawa's TD Place Stadium, Rodriguez delivered an overhead bicycle kick that hit the underside of the Cavaliers' goal crossbar and fell over the goal line.
This goal quickly became known on the Internet as the “icicle kick”.
Rodriguez scored his second goal of the game in extra time to give Atlético a dramatic victory.
Canada men's team head coach Jesse Marsh, who attended the game, says he has received “20 to 30 messages” from people in Europe about the CPL finals.
