Warning: spoilers for Maxton Hall Episode 2 of season 2 is ahead.
After last week's three-episode premiere, it must have felt like Maxton Hall Season 2 slowed down the pace. However, the last few moments Season 2 Episode 4 proved anything but.
However, I don't think James will feel Mortimer's true rage… but rather Lydia (Sonja Weisser), his secretly pregnant sister.
Mortimer's anger will be bad news for Lydia after Season 2 Episode 4, “Maxton Hall.”
Surprise! In episodes 1-3, we found out that Lydia was pregnant and initially only told Ruby about it before James accidentally found out. The only person who doesn't know is Mortimer, and it's unlikely that this will be a happy occasion for him.
As disappointing as James is, Lydia seems to be even less in her father's favor. She tries to balance school and social life with caring for her brother after their mother's death, while also proving to Mortimer that she is worthy of joining the family business.
Because James broke the rules by being with Ruby, Lydia is punished. This is seen as her fault for not keeping her brother on the right path, leading Mortimer to believe that she is unsuited to be part of the family business. “Trust has to be earned,” he mockingly tells her in episode four.
However, there is another spanner in the works. The child's father is Graham Sutton (Aidin Jalali), a teacher at James and Lydia's school. She had an affair with him in the first season, and now that he has become deputy director, Lydia insists on never telling him the truth.
Personally, I think we're really glossing over how morally disgusting this relationship was, and the combination of pregnancy and a relationship with her father will lead Lydia to a dark place. James gets so much attention, but to me she's probably the most vulnerable.
She's putting on a brave face for now. But if Mortimer finds James and Ruby together in Maxton Hall Episode 5 of Season 2 (which, let's face it, is quite likely) is another nail in Lydia's metaphorical coffin. She currently has no duty of care in any area of her life and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
