RuneScape Ends Treasure Hunter Microtransactions on January 19, 2026

The RuneScape community has made a decision

World Runescape will soon change forever. Today, Jagex announced that Treasure Hunter microtransactions from the game will be removed permanently on January 19, 2026, marking one of the biggest changes in MMO history. The decision followed a massive community vote in which more than 120,000 players demanded the feature be removed.

Treasure Hunter, introduced in 2014, allows players to win in-game prizes such as experience boosts, gold, and progress-boosting items. While everyone receives a few free keys every day, many purchase additional keys with real money, making this feature a key part of RuneScape's monetization for over a decade.

When Jagex removes Treasure Hunter, it will also remove 225 Direct XP and skill-related items from sale. The studio plans to eliminate all purchasable items that provide direct gameplay benefits, aiming to create a fairer and more balanced experience for all players.

This change is part of Jagex's year-long integrity roadmap to improve the foundation of RuneScape. The team will address long-standing issues in combat, UI, daily activities, and early and mid-game content. The developers also plan to refresh the game's visual identity and modernize the core systems that have shaped the gaming experience over the years.

Jagex says these updates represent a new promise to strengthen RuneScape's integrity and restore player trust. By eliminating gameplay shortcuts and focusing on genuine progression, the studio hopes to bring the game closer to its community-driven roots. RuneScape is now available on PC, Steam, iOS and Android with full cross-platform play and progression.
