The Vivaldi web browser is already an attractive alternative to Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Firefox, and now it gets even better with updated tab syncing. There are also some useful changes to the New Tab page, performance controls, and the built-in email client.
Vivaldi 7.7 is out now for Windows, macOS and desktop Linux, and the main improvement is better organization of synced tabs and windows. When you move from one computer to another, you can recreate the exact workspace with tabs and tab stacks completely intact. In terms of functionality it is close to syncing tabs in Firefox and Chromebut Vivaldi's implementation is more focused on maintaining the entire organizational structure of your browser's workspace.
In a blog post, the company said: “You can move entire windows while maintaining their complete structure. Stacks remain stacked, workspace organization is preserved, and relationships between tabs remain exactly as you organized them.”
The update also combines speed dial elements (Vivaldi takes inspiration from the classic Opera browser) and widgets into a new “start page” that acts like the browser's default new tab page. You can set up a personalized dashboard with frequently used links, task list, bookmarks, weather information and more.
You can also ignore the start page entirely by setting it to a blank page or a specific web page. For what it's worth, Vivaldi may be the most customizable web browser ever made—the endless settings panels can be intimidating, but if you don't like something, you can probably change it.
Speaking of settings panels, there's a new Performance section with Power Saving and Memory Saving options. You can use them to force Vivaldi to use more system resources for better performance, or to restart the browser for the benefit of your other applications.
The Vivaldi update also brings a few minor changes to round out the list. If you use Vivaldi's built-in email client, you'll appreciate the visual and readability changes. The privacy dashboard and About page have also been redesigned.
The blog post also states: “Every major browser uses the same simplified, locked-down interface. “Vivaldi is moving in the opposite direction: more control, more flexibility, more respect for the fact that users have their own workflows and deserve tools that allow the browser to adapt to them.”
Vivaldi 7.7 is already available for Windows, Linux and macOS. You can download it from the official websiteMobile versions are also available for Android and iOS.
