Sony is making a Horizon MMO — here’s the video and details

The new game is called Steel horizon bordersand Sony and Korean video game company NCSoft are working on it together. Based on the 10-minute-plus video we watched, which includes cinematic and pre-gameplay footage as well as interviews with the developers, the game will focus on combating Horizon giant mechanical beasts from the series and the ability to do it with other people.

Sony and the PR firm representing NCSoft did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Edge originally noticed the promotional art for Steel Borders on a website used to share gaming assets that are allowed to be used by media and influencers. It looks like the art was published earlier, perhaps before the announcement on G-Star 2025 event in Korea later this evening. The site also included a link to a publicly accessible Google Drive that contained the video. According to this site, Steel Borders will be available on PC, iOS and Android.

Footage from the video shows players battling beasts and navigating through lush natural environments and looming metal buildings that you may be familiar with if you've played Horizon games.

Steel horizon borders “is a full-fledged MMORPG that NCSoft created specifically for mobile devices,” says Jan-Bart van Beek, director of the PlayStation Guerilla Games studio, in the video. Steel Bordersyou can enter this world anywhere and anytime. Players take on the role of machine hunters searching for opportunity in a region called the Death Lands. It's inspired by Arizona and New Mexico. You share a border with thousands of other players, sometimes working together to destroy machines, and sometimes competing with rival tribes or fighting for resources, and this combination of cooperation and competition creates moments you will never be able to describe.”

“Basic concept Steel horizon borders can be summed up in one phrase: the thrill of destroying colossal machines,” says executive producer Sung-Goo Lee in the video. “Hunting huge machines was one of the great appeals of the original Horizon series. And now we are extending this experience to the world of MMORPGs.” Lee says that there will be new mechanics for fighting machines, for example, picking up weapons dropped by animals and transferring them to a horse for use in subsequent battles.

The video also highlights the features of customizing the characters in the game – in Steel BordersInstead of playing as Aloy, who has been the main character of the series so far, you will be able to create your own character.

The video doesn't include a release date, but Lee says the team is working to make the game available “as soon as possible.”
