As with any new piece of furniture, you'll need to take a little time to balance your needs with the space and budget you have for it.
What's your budget?
Prices for standing desks vary widely, but you can find a great desk to suit your needs on almost any budget. As noted above, my favorite option under $350 was the Ikea Trotten standing desk.
How much space do you have?
Before you make a purchase, make sure you have enough space for a standing desk. Just don't count the room it's in. Also think about doors, stairwells and other places the box needs to fit through. It may fit in your planned office space, but if you can't get it to the third floor, you'll be in trouble.
How tall do you want to reach?
All height-adjustable desks have a low and high range for sitting and standing, but height adjustment ranges are not universal across styles and brands. If you are shorter or taller, some models may not be comfortable for you, so check the specifications beforehand to determine whether you can comfortably use the desk while sitting or standing.
Electric or manual?
An electric desk will cost more than a manual desk, so your budget will definitely come into play here, but there are some other things to consider. Manual desks equipped with pneumatic pedals, hand cranks, or other manual controls are lighter and quieter because there is no heavy, noisy motor underneath the desk. Manual desks also do not require proximity to an outlet to operate. Electric standing desks allow you to easily raise and lower them with the touch of a button. Some even have digital height indicators so you can always return your desk to the same height settings while sitting or standing.
