More than 20 poultry and other animals died after a fire broke out at a hair salon in Valley Stream Tuesday night.
Detectives said officers responded to Ben & Tony's Barber Shop on West Merrick Road around 9 p.m. for a report of a fire.
When they arrived, thick smoke and flames were coming from the building.
The owner of the building lost his business and about 20 birds he raised.

Firefighters also said the fire killed the aquarium and possibly turtles.
No injuries were reported.
The Valley Stream Fire Department and neighboring fire departments were able to quickly extinguish the fire and keep it from spreading. Two empty adjacent buildings were damaged by smoke.
The fire was declared non-hazardous.
The investigation is being conducted by the Nassau County Fire Marshal and Arson Squad.
