- Sony Announces Japan-Exclusive PS5 Digital Edition
- This version will be significantly cheaper at 55,000 yen (about $355).
- The launch will take place on November 21, 2025.
How PlayStation 5 celebrates five years since launch, Sony announced a new Japan-exclusive PS5 Digital Edition at a lower price.
The company unveiled the new digital edition of the PS5 during State of Play on November 11, confirming that the console will release on November 21, 2025 and will only be available in Japan.
The stream also showed packaging that states “Console Language: Japanese Only” on the front of the box, but other than that specification, the console won't have any major hardware changes.
This version, according to Sony, “provides great value” and will retail for 55,000 yen (about $355), making it significantly cheaper than other PS5 Digital Editions currently on sale in other regions.
By comparison, the console currently costs $499.99 in the US and £429.99 in the UK, making the Japanese version cheaper by $144.99.
Sony's decision to release a cheaper version of the PS5 Digital Edition in Japan is similar to how Nintendo released a significantly less expensive version of the PS5 in Japanese. Switch 2 for 49,980 yen (about $345), which is about $110 less than the US version.
One of the main reasons for the sharp difference in market prices may be higher tariffs in the US, where equipment prices have risen sharply this year.
In August the cost of all PS5 consoles has increased by $50.bringing the standard PS5 up from $499.99 to $549.99, the PS5 Digital Edition from $449.99 to $499.99, and the latest PS5 Pro from $699.99 to $749.99.
Despite price increases, Sony's latest financial results confirm The PlayStation 5 sold 84.2 million units over its lifetime..
