One of the few unique joys of being online in the big year of 2025 is watching celebrities gasp slightly when Letterboxd asks them to list their four favorite movies.
Never in my life did I think that I would be lucky enough to learn about Pope Leo XIVhis cinematic tastes, but I think it's a sign to dream BIG because the Chicago-born pontiff just revealed his four favorite films.
Topping the Pope's list is Frank Capra. It's a wonderful life.
Next we have The Sound of Music.
The Pope's third choice Ordinary peoplefilm by Robert Redford.
And finally: Life is wonderful.
Diversity Reports that the list of expected participants includes Spike Lee, Cate Blanchett, Chris Pine, Viggo Mortensen, Alison Brie, Dave Franco, Monica Bellucci and others.
Sergio Castellitto is also expected to meet with the Pope on Saturday. Castellitto played Cardinal Tedesco in Conclave, A Nominee for Best Picture 2025is a film about a group of cardinals who reveal the secrets of their community when choosing the next pope.
IN official statement from the VaticanThe pope calls the event an opportunity to “deepen the dialogue with the world of cinema… to explore the possibilities that artistic creativity offers for the mission of the Church and the promotion of human values.”
People on the internet love EVERYTHING about it. As does his apparent secret cinephile personality: “the way he defaulted to listing four… ditch that inbox @ king.”
“Take @Pontifex to the criteria closet,” one person tweeted.
The Internet also can't stop talking about his choice of guests: “I want you to let us know that we are ready,” one person wrote about his potential meeting with Sergio Castellitto, as Pope Francis did in 2023.
There were a lot of jokes too. “During awards season, the Vatican is holding a directors’ roundtable,” another tweet said.
“He must really like Roberts,” one Twitter user wrote.
Of course, some slights must be acknowledged.
But overall we are SO back. What do you think? Do you agree with Pope Leo XIV's choices for his four favorite films?
