Ahead of the Game – PlatyGuard: Swarm Slayer is a hack-and-slash roguelike amidst cool duck-billed folk

  • Complete each level using roguelike skills.
  • Parry and dodge to counter enemies
  • Survive the apocalypse, die and try again

This week you have to fight your way through the apocalypse. Game series aheadwhere we will tell you all about the new mobile game that can be played in one form or another despite its unofficial launch.

PlatyGuard: Swarm Slayer immediately feels like a cross between Dead Cells and Iron Shadow: Undestroyed V2 – and that's not bad at all. This 2D roguelike offers hack and slash action from the start, but what makes it stand out for me is the fact that there are characters with ducks around and that makes it even more interesting.

I also really appreciate the shocking twist that hits you in the face right after the lesson – I won't spoil it because you'll have to experience it for yourself. Combat, as you'd expect, is a fast-paced and incredibly action-packed affair, with various skills you can acquire and improve your stats as you progress.

Now you won't just mindlessly fight your way through the hive's misfortunes – you can perform perfectly timed parries and dodges to take out enemies in a single blow, adding a strategic element whenever a new big bad appears on screen.

Of course, you'll also occasionally encounter gifts, shops, and friendly people—a roguelike staple that's one of the reasons I love the genre so much.
