After undergoing a complete transformation to play professional boxer Christy Martin, Sydney Sweeney's new sports biopic failed to live up to expectations, recording one of the worst box office performances in history.
The new film, titled Christie, was released on November 7th and earned just $1.3 million worldwide in its first weekend. The film was released in 2011 theaters, meaning the film averaged just $649 per theater.
This puts Christie among the 15 worst-debuting films on more than 2,000 screens, according to Cashier Mojo. The 2012 film Oogie's Lovers Big Balloon Adventure takes the top spot, but many of the other films on the list were either released during the pandemic or re-released. Christie has yet to reveal her official production budget, but Reel World estimates it to be around $30–40 million, meaning the film has little chance of making back its budget.
Directed by David Michaud, the film explores the true story of professional boxer and 2009 WBC women's welterweight title winner Christy Martin. The film follows a small-town West Virginia girl, Christy, who, through tenacity, raw determination, and the guidance of her coach and manager-turned-husband, achieves stardom.
The official synopsis reads: “But while Christie flaunts a fiery personality in the ring, her toughest battles take place outside of it—confronting family, identity, and relationships that could be the difference between life and death. Based on remarkable true events, Christy Martin's story is one of resilience, courage and the fight for your life.”
