Ron DeSantis, the governor of the free state of Florida, took a swipe at New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani during a speech marking Victims of Communism Day on Friday.
Victims of Communism Day was established in the Sunshine State in 2022, but it takes on extra significance this year following Mamdani's election victory earlier this week.
An appropriate state nickname for a man who wants to shed light on the deadly dangers of communism, long suppressed by an education system that helped deliver ignorant voters to Mamdani in crowds.
“We remember the 100 million who died at the hands of Marxist-Leninist regimes and celebrate those who bravely fought for liberation from communism,” DeSantis (R) wrote on X. “We must ensure that young people understand the destructiveness of communist ideology.”
This is not only a day of remembrance for the millions of victims of a deadly political and economic ideology, but also an opportunity for education. The bill, signed by DeSantis in 2022, directs schools to develop comprehensive instruction in the history of communism beginning in the 2026-2027 school year.
“We must ensure that students learn the lessons of history, recognize the destructiveness of Marxism-Leninism, and appreciate the founding principles of the American republic,” the governor said. says the statement.
Today is Victims of Communism Day in the state of Florida.
We remember the 100 million who died at the hands of Marxist-Leninist regimes and pay tribute to those who bravely fought for liberation from communism.
We must make young people aware of the destructiveness…

There were more troubling aspects to Mamdani's victory speech
Unfortunately, Mamdani voters did not realize the destructiveness of communism, whether outside obvious ignorance or wayward ignorance. DeSantis emphasized the significance of Victims of Communism Day in light of recent events.
“We just had a guy elected in New York City—elected mayor,” he said in a speech marking the day. “You know, I walked up to the podium and quoted Ronald Reagan, he walked up to the podium and quoted a guy named Eugene V. Debs, who was a communist.”
RedState reporter Nick Arama highlighted Mamdani's “anxiety” victory speech it mentioned Debs, a prominent socialist who was arrested in 1918 under the Espionage Act and sentenced to ten years in federal prison. sentence commuted President Warren Harding.
“The sun may have set on our city tonight,” Mamdani told his supporters. “But as Eugene Debs once said, “I see the dawn of a better day for mankind.”
The irony here is that communist rule will plunge the city that never sleeps into a dark hell.
Historical estimates are attributed to approximately 100 million deaths communist regimes in the 20th century, including 20 million under Stalin's Soviet Union, 65 million under Mao's China and millions more in Cambodia, North Korea and Eastern Europe.
Florida knows this scourge all too well.
The communist regime in Cuba caused suffering through systematic human rights violations, including political repression, arbitrary detention, and the suppression of freedom of speech. Not to mention chronic economic stagnation, characterized by scarcity and poverty, that has led to massive humanitarian crises and driven those fleeing oppression to Florida's shores.
“I can’t think of a place in this country where there is a more instinctive understanding of the dangers of communism than in our communities in South Florida,” DeSantis said.
New Yorkers did not seem to understand these basic facts on Election Day. And now people moving to Florida won't just be coming from Cuba. About a million residents indicated that they will”definitely“Flee New York now that Mamdani is in charge.
