RAfael Escobedo de la Riva was heading home from his office in Santa Cruz de Tenerife when he took this photo. New bike lanes were recently installed and it seems to have taken riders a while to adjust. “Local residents have encountered some resistance and misunderstanding about this new way of moving around the city,” says Escobedo de la Riva.
He took this photo after one particular incident and immediately knew he had captured something special. Many people get the impression of a red and white lighthouse against a blue sea, but his interpretation is much grander: “I was actually more reminded of the early 20th century Russian Constructivist work,” says architect Escobedo de la Riva. “The strong geometric architecture and composition” drew him to the scene in the first place, adding that he “would like people to be inspired to use their imagination and find similar geometric compositions in their cities. We are surrounded by them.”
It's been several months since he took that photo, and Escobedo still supports bike lanes. “This is a great initiative with positive benefits for our health and our planet, so I hope these issues will be resolved over time.” For now, he's grateful for the opportunity he got during his uneventful commute. “When you pay attention, you can find beautiful surprises.”
