On November 8, 2000, a recount began in Florida that played a decisive role in determining the winner of the 2000 presidential election between Republican George W. Bush and Democratic Vice President Al Gore. The recount will officially end on Dec. 12, ordered by the U.S. Supreme Court, handing Florida's electoral votes and the presidency to Bush.
