Olivia Rodrigo makes it clear that she is unhappy with the Trump administration (and his Department of Homeland Security) using her music to promote their policies. On Friday, the pop singer criticized White House and DHS for publishing a self-deportation video using one of her songs.
A video posted to Instagram on Tuesday, opened with a chaotic rock section of her favorite song, “All-American Bitch” by the Guts, showcasing snippets of ICE agents detaining undocumented immigrants, with the caption “If ICE Finds You,” and then undocumented immigrants seemingly deciding to self-deport, with a softer, more peaceful part of the next song.
“LEAVE NOW and self-deport using the CBP Home app,” read the caption on the DHS post. “If you don't, you will face the consequences.”
In a comment that has since been deleted (though it is unclear whether it was written by Rodrigo or DHS), Rodrigo wrote: “Don't ever use my songs to promote your racist, hateful propaganda.” Since being deleted, Rodrigo's fans have copied and pasted her original message to remind viewers of Rodrigo's views.
In response to Rolling StoneWhen asked to comment on the matter, a DHS spokesperson said, “America is always grateful to our federal law enforcement officers who keep us safe. We invite Ms. Rodrigo to thank them for their service, not to diminish their sacrifice.”
Rodrigo has been vocal in his opposition to Trump's policies and racist approach to immigration enforcement. When ICE began mass raids against Los Angeles residents in June, Rodrigo shared a story on Instagram condemning the deportations.
“I have lived in Los Angeles my entire life and am deeply upset by these brutal deportations of my neighbors under the current administration,” Rodrigo wrote. “Los Angeles simply wouldn't exist without immigrants. Treating hardworking community members with so little respect, empathy and due process is appalling.”
She continued: “I stand with the wonderful, diverse community of Los Angeles and immigrants across America. I support our right to free speech and freedom to protest.”
A representative for Rodrigo did not immediately respond to Rolling StoneRequest for additional comments.
