Nebraska Blocks Medicaid Funds for Abortion Providers

Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen (R) announced decree on Thursday banned abortion providers from participating in the state's Medicaid system.

Nebraska's decision follows a June Supreme Court decision that found the high court rules that South Carolina could block Planned Parenthood from receiving Medicaid funds by finding that Planned Parenthood cannot sue the state under civil rights law. Several states have excited following the ruling, block abortion providers from their Medicaid programs.

“There will not be a penny of Nebraska tax revenue going to Planned Parenthood clinics,” Pillen said. according to on NTV.

Attorney General Mike Hilgers said the order means “Nebraska tax dollars cannot go to Medicaid clinics that are not approved by DHHS (Department of Health and Human Services)” and that no taxpayer funds will support abortions in the state.

The order requires taxpayer money to be redirected to “highly qualified health care providers” who do not perform abortions, according to the report. Government officials also cited reports abortion clinics in “disgusting conditions.”

“The stories about the conditions of these particular institutions are something you don't see, you shouldn't see anywhere, anywhere in the world, to be completely honest. I think it puts the health of women at risk. Of course, I think it puts the health of their child at risk,” Hilgers said.

Dr. Steve Corsi, director general of the Department of Human Services, said DHHS will monitor compliance to ensure that abortion-related procedures are not reclassified to avoid a ban.

Planned Parenthood responded to the move with a statement in which PP North Central President and CEO Ruth Richardson called the order “nothing more than a publicity stunt by state leaders designed to confuse abortion providers in Nebraska about their health care options.”

Leading pro-life organization Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America praised Pillen, calling him “a tremendous advocate for unborn children and their mothers.”

“We commend his leadership and echo his words: 'Not a penny' of taxpayer money should ever be forced into an abortion industry that destroys the lives of countless children while simultaneously abusing women for profit,” SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser said in part in a statement.
