- Google has added flashcards, quizzes, and smart chat to the NotebookLM mobile app.
- These customizable learning tools were previously only available on desktop computers.
- The update also enhances the Gemini-based conversation experience and provides longer-lasting context and memory on mobile devices.
Google's LaptopLM is bringing some of its best AI-powered learning features to its mobile app and expanding its chat capabilities along the way. Now you can create flashcards and tests based on the sources you download, even when you go to class for a test.
NotebookLM started out as an AI assistant for students, but it has since evolved into a broader hub for processing information in documents, written notes, and even YouTube videos into formats that may be more useful for learning. This includes flashcards and quizzes released earlier this year for desktop computers.
For those who have used NotebookLM primarily on a laptop, the move to mobile devices isn't just about portability. It's about closing the distance between intention and action. You can practice concepts while you wait for coffee, take a quiz before bed, or collect flashcards on the way home.
NotebookLM is designed to allow you to upload and annotate sources, ask questions about your materials, and extract valuable information from long documents. It extracts PDFs, transcripts, lecture notes, and basically anything that contains text.
Until now, the app has mostly passively mirrored the desktop version's capabilities. You could browse and scroll, but not fully engage. You can now personalize flashcards and quizzes by setting the topic, difficulty level, and duration.
Study trip
The update adds flexibility to these sources, allowing you to temporarily select or deselect the sources the AI uses to generate answers and tests. This is very important if you have uploaded dozens of documents and do not want the test to be based on the wrong week's material. It adds a level of control that's especially useful when you're on the move and less likely to look through file settings.
The chat improvements aren't just cosmetic. They fundamentally change the way users interact with their notes. A longer context window means the AI can track more of your training session, providing the kind of continuity that mobile AI tools typically lack. So, while it may not automatically get you an A, it will at least help you keep track of all the details you need to remember until it's time to start the exam.
