I hope Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Trisha McLaughlin has a good sleep schedule because her job must be grueling. As an agency spokeswoman, she constantly has to expose various hoaxes related to immigration enforcement efforts, and they become more absurd the further we move into President Donald Trump's term.
Another one popped up on Wednesday, this time from a Los Angeles Times reporter named Britney Mejia (yes, that's how she spells it). In her report, she claimed that the agents “drove off” with the arrestee's daughter, implying that they had kidnapped her. Naturally, her title did not include any of the most important parts of the interaction.

Maria Avalos, the child's grandmother, said agents “should never have left” with her granddaughter.
“When they got in the car and took my granddaughter, I said, 'Why are they taking her, are they really ICE, are they kidnapping her or what?'” she said.

McLaughlin responded more contextually, pointing out that the man got out of the car with a hammer and began throwing rocks at the ICE agents. He was also in possession of a loaded stolen firearm. While all this was happening, the man's daughter was left unattended in the car.

I want those on the left who immediately started arguing that this is like the “Gestapo” to think critically for a moment, maybe even gain a modicum of intellectual honesty. If an attacker becomes violent, as this man did, what else are agents supposed to do other than get a child out of a dangerous situation? Where should she have been left alone in the car after her father was arrested? Should they give it to some random person who came up and claimed to be a family member? And if they did, wouldn't journalists and their ICE opponents go crazy in response?
In the United States, when someone is arrested, if their child is present, that child is taken into custody and reunited with another legal guardian. This is not controversial. In fact, this is the only logical way to deal with such a situation; otherwise, you risk harm to the child or the child falling into the hands of someone who is not a parent or viable family member.
However, it's a matter of ridiculous, conflicting expectations. None of these press reports indicate any real concern about the procedures. They box ICE to the point where all enforcement actions are considered unacceptable. In this case, the agents did nothing wrong, and if you continue to harass them with slander and lies, someone will be killed.
