- Explore pristine corridors and tranquil pools
- Take a walk among the emptiness
- Apparently no one is watching you
It's probably just the last tentacles of that Halloween spirit that still clings to me, but Pools feels like an incredibly fitting release for mobile this week – mainly because it has that sense of lingering dread that you're never quite sure of.
Now, with a name like “Pools,” you might be wondering what exactly makes a man-made body of water so damn creepy. But that's the thing: throughout the entire exploration game you are bothered by nothingness that follows you everywhere you go, and this alone can send shivers down someone's spine (I know they will be mine).
Either way, Finnish developer Tensori launched this surreal experience on iOS today after it was announced last monthoffering you plenty of liminal spaces to delve into if you somehow feel like crawling out while you're standing in line for ramen or getting ready for bed (and want the nightmares to begin). It should give you that “forever stuck at 3am, forever abandoned” feeling that for the life of me I can't find more terrifying. I also have a debilitating fear of sea creatures and deep water, so maybe that's it.
While there are no monstrous fiends or legions of the undead pounding on the door, I'd say it's still creepy. If you want to learn more about the developers, you can join the following community at Instagram for all the latest updates. You can also contact the official website for more information about this supposedly “meditative” romp through empty corridors and endless silence.
Oh, and by the way, the official press release also recommends “bring headphones. Wait a moment. And don’t worry, no one is watching you here.”
Make of it what you will.
