ARLINGTON, Texas — Jacoby Brissett threw for two touchdowns and ran for a score, again replacing Kyler Murray, and the Arizona Cardinals snapped a five-game losing streak with a 27-17 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night.
Brissett made his third straight start after the week began with expectations that Murray would return from a foot injury suffered following the team's open week.
The Cardinals turned to Brissett instead, and coach Jonathan Gannon said Murray wasn't quite ready. Arizona (3-5) won for just the second time in its last 18 games that Murray didn't take at least five snaps or left the game altogether.
The Cowboys (3-5-1) were unable to build momentum after Sam Williams' blocked punt was recovered in the end zone by Marshawn Niland, giving up long touchdowns on Arizona's next two possessions either side of halftime and trailing 24-7.
Marvin Harrison had a career-high seven catches for 96 yards, including a 4-yarder for the first touchdown of the game. Tight end Trey McBride made a 12-yard touchdown grab.
After blocking the punt and recovering the score, the Cowboys averaged 10.8 yards on Arizona's next 15 plays, including consecutive 16-yard passes immediately after the Dallas TD and a 50-yard interception by Michael Wilson on the second play after halftime.
The Cowboys easily got to the Arizona 7, picking up a first down on the game's first possession, but came away empty-handed on a failed conversion on fourth down.
Dallas, which lost back-to-back games for the first time under first-year coach Brian Schottenheimer, scored just three points on its first three trips to the Arizona 25, leading to a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit.
The Cardinals lost Brissett's first two starts, but not because the 32-year-old veteran was ineffective. He was reliable again, going 21 of 31 for 261 yards without an interception, giving him 760 yards, six touchdowns and one pick in three games without Murray.
The Cowboys' last hope ended with a second loss. Javonte Williams ripped the ball away as he went down on a short interception with less than five minutes left.
Dak Prescott threw just one touchdown in a week after throwing none as one of the league's best offenses was lethargic again. The scoring throw came from 5 yards out in the fourth quarter for Ryan Flournoy's first career touchdown.
Dallas kicker Brandon Aubry had range but was wide left on a 68-yard field goal attempt to end the first half. That would break the NFL record set a day earlier by Jacksonville's Cam Little, who broke Justin Tucker's 2021 record by 2 yards.
Cardinals CB Max Melton left the game with a concussion in the opener and did not return. … Cowboys LB Jack Sanborn (groin) was placed on injured reserve before the game.
Cardinals: At Seattle on Sunday.
Cowboys: Road next week at Las Vegas with another game on Monday night, November 17th.
