Like the one who loved Dancing with the Stars since I was a real kid, it's been great to see how popular the show has become over the past couple of seasons. Everyone, including their mother, watches it, and the ex-dancer in me LIVES, despite all the talk about dancing!
And another thing about being a dancer is that I am very critical of judging, especially when it seems unfair. But I'm certainly not the only one.
If you don't know, Dancing with the Stars has three judges: Carrie Ann Inaba, Derek Hough (the best, yes, I said it) and Bruno Tonioli. And, at least for the past two seasons, fans have noticed that Carrie Ann's performance has not been the most consistent.
I won't list all the criticisms she gets (because there are a lot), but I'll name a few: people claim she treats female contestants harder than male contestants, allows favoritism to influence her results rather than being impartial, and is generally inconsistent.
Even one data scientist at TikTok analyzed all Carrie Ann's ratings compared to her fellow judges through statistical analysis and has proven mathematically that her assessment is the least consistent and most biased. Yes, the knowledge is deep.
And the criticism isn't just coming online: Carrie Ann has been booed by audiences in real life many times over the past couple of seasons. So, ICYMI, she is well aware that people don't like her as a judge.
Enter Taylor Swift. (Hang in there.) She recently released a song called “Actually Romantic” (which had your own knowledgebut that's for another time). The song is essentially a response to haters pointing out that it actually takes a lot of effort to hate someone, which is actually, well, kind of cute.
Well, Carrie Ann must have struck a chord with True Romantic because on October 22nd she posted by TikTok to the song, seemingly responding to all the backlash. In the video, we see the lyrics “my Wednesday morning anthem” on screen, and Carrie Ann lip-syncs the chorus, “But it's actually sweet, all the time you spent on me/It's honestly wild, all the effort you put in/It's actually romantic,” and blows a kiss at the end.
And now you're probably wondering what the hell people said in the comments of this video… and it does NOT disappoint. The top comment has over 95k likes and reads: “Really good TikTok. No comments. Great! 8″. – a genius way to make fun if you ask me. Carrie herself even liked this comment.
In addition to this, she also addressed criticism in her Comments on Instagram after the Night of Dedication on October 17, according to Us weekly. “It’s okay to disagree with what we see. That’s what makes our show great,” she said. “You have a say in this matter. We want you to vote for what you love and believe in.”
So there you have it: Carrie Ann is well aware of the criticism. And while I completely agree with the issues the internet raises, I have to say it's nice to see her approach it with a bit of humor. (How's that for an unbiased judgement?)
