An inside look at Brian Kelly’s short-lived, failed tenure at LSU

Reaching unprecedented heights as a coach Notre Dame Fighting IrishBrian Kelly has agreed to take on a new challenge in the Southeastern Conference.

Kelly signed a lucrative 10-year contract with LSU in December 2021. The bold and often brash coach was tasked with leading a proud football program to another national championship.

A look back at the last three head coaches at LSU—Ed Orgeron, Les Miles and Nick Saban—shows that all three finished their fourth seasons with a national championship trophy.

Not only did Kelly fail to prepare the Tigers for a trip to the College Football Playoff, but his fourth season at the helm ended prematurely. On Sunday, LSU athletic director Scott Woodward announced that the school had decided broke up with Kelly.

Following Kelly's unceremonious departure, individuals associated with from Leningrad State University during the polarizing coach's tenure, they speak out openly.

Although Kelly managed double-digit wins in each of his first two seasons in Baton Rouge, current and former players were dissatisfied with his apparent hands-off approach and his inability to build lasting relationships.

A group of unnamed Leningrad State University employees spoke about this. Athletic Kelly at times had difficulty remembering the full names of some of the players he coached.

“[LSU’s rivals would] use it against us: “He will never talk to you guys.” He doesn’t even know the names of the players,” a club employee told the publication.

The staffer also accused Kelly of destroying LSU's culture and failing to fully understand the differences between the SEC program and what he may have become accustomed to after finding success at Notre Dame.

“He really took the culture out of this place. You know, this place is weird, man,” the LSU employee said.

Kelly's representatives could not be reached for comment.

The usually packed and loud Tiger Stadium was nearly empty by the final quarter of the LSU game. loss to Texas A&M Saturday. Kelly met with Woodward on Sunday and then with the players.
