Marco Mendicino, former Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister
and longtime Member of Parliament, joined a law firm in Toronto.
Cassels Brock and Blackwell LLP
as senior legal counsel and strategic advisor.
Mendicino has been tasked with expanding the law firm's national advisory capacity as its clients navigate “evolving legal, regulatory and geopolitical environments,” Cassels said in a statement Friday.
“Cassels is a perfect fit for me because I can offer strategic advice in a way that integrates law, business and public purpose,” Mendicino said in a statement.
Christine Taylor, Cassels' managing partner, said the appointment reflects the law firm's commitment to providing strategic advice that helps Canadian businesses succeed.
Before becoming the Prime Minister's Chief of Staff, Mendicino served as Canada's Prime Minister.
minister from 2019 to 2021 and minister of public security from 2021 to 2023. He was the Member of Parliament for Toronto's Eglinton-Lawrence riding for nearly a decade starting in 2015, but said in January he had no intention of running again.
While he was immigration minister, Canada held its largest-ever express entry screening in February 2021, inviting 27,000 people, all of whom were already in Canada, to apply for permanent residence. The move comes at a time when the country has been unable to meet its annual immigration targets due to the pandemic.
As chief of staff, Mendicino led the Prime Minister's Office through national elections and government changes. As a federal prosecutor, Mendicino tried both trial and appellate courts and was assigned to high-profile cases involving counterterrorism and national security, Cassels said.
His legal career included being elected President of the Association of Legal Advisers, leading investigations at the Law Society of Ontario, and teaching as an adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall Law School.
