Moe says Carney’s meeting with Xi a positive step towards resolving trade dispute – Brandon Sun

REGINA — Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says Premier Mark Carney's meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping is a positive step forward.

Moe says he hopes Canada can strengthen its relationship with China and eventually win Beijing's tariffs on Canadian canola and other food products.

He says it would be unrealistic for China to lift tariffs during the meeting.

Carney said he was pleased with the meeting and accepted an invitation to visit China to further discuss trade issues.

Moe says Carney also needs to develop relationships with the United States and India, which have also imposed tariffs on Canada.

Moe says Ontario Premier Doug Ford's recent anti-tariff ad hasn't helped in deal negotiations with U.S. President Donald Trump.

“There will be a lot of noise from now until we can get to that point, and I'm sure there will be,” he told reporters on Friday. “We're keeping an eye on this deal. That's what we want.”
