Rangers continue success on the road with comeback win over Oilers – Brandon Sun

EDMONTON — The New York Rangers appear to be a lot further away from the Big Apple.

JT Miller scored 2:49 into overtime as the Rangers overcame a two-goal deficit to earn a dramatic 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday.

Johnny Brodzinski, Braden Schneider and Taylor Raddysh also scored for the Rangers (5-5-2), who improved to 5-1-1 on the road.

They remain winless at home, have an abysmal 0-4-1 record, are outscored 15-6 overall and have not played their first three games at Madison Square Garden.

On the road they beat their opponents with a score of 22-14.

“We need confidence,” said Miller, who had a clear lead in overtime after the Oilers' Evan Bouchard and Leon Draisaitl tangled in coverage before scoring his third goal of the season.

“I think we enjoyed at least two periods of our game on the road, we played a really good team at home. We needed that to get some confidence and see some pucks and hopefully that can push us and continue our play a little bit more on this trip. We have a good chance to finish it off right.”

The Rangers finish a four-game road trip in Seattle against the Kraken on Saturday.

Things weren't looking great after 40 minutes with Edmonton leading 3-1, but the Rangers took advantage of some glaring plays and continued to hustle throughout the match.

“You just had to stay in the game,” said defenseman Schneider, who added an assist. “We were getting a little frustrated and you started to try to force it and the idea was to just stay with it and keep pushing and I thought we did that. I thought we were on top throughout the third period, I thought we created a lot of chances and got rewarded for it. I thought it was great in the third period.”

Schneider and Brodzinski scored their first goals of the season in this game, and goaltender Igor Shesterkin each made 33 saves to earn the victory.

“We need that all season long to get that depth,” Miller said. “They played damn well, controlled the game today and made it easy for the next line to come out. It was a real team effort and when they looked like that, the Sixers played amazing. It's just a great team win that we can build on moving forward.”

Depth scoring was essential as the Rangers are still the only team in the NHL without a single forward with eight points this season, led by defenseman Adam Fox with nine points. Artemi Panarin leads all forwards with seven points.

But while some big names have been somewhat stagnant in scoring, head coach Mike Sullivan said their contributions are still being felt.

“Obviously we're very happy to be back, it's a sign of the character we have in the room,” he said. “I think our leadership group has led the charge and it's great to be a part of something like that where you can come back against a really good team like Edmonton.”

Being road warriors is nothing new for Rangers, who have been a very strong road team for several seasons now.

Entering the 2021-22 season on the road, the Rangers lead the NHL in points (217) and lead the NHL in wins (99). Over the same time period, the Rangers are 99-53-19 on the road.
