The time-tested tradition of de-making has arrived. Hollow Knight: Silk Songsending Team Cherry's incredibly challenging Metroidvania back to the N64 era.
Created by talented game developer and artist Gustavo Barros under the pseudonym Botão Select on YouTubeThis exceptional Silksong N64 demo takes the smooth, vibrant visuals from the game's Moss Grotto location, mutes the colors, blurs the resolution, and adds nearly a hundred thousand polygons for texture. The result is really similar to Hollow Knight: Silksong has time-traveled to around 1996, which is pretty cool!
Made in Godot! I explained every part of the process in this video here: https://t.co/X0yAH0Zvls.October 29, 2025
You can watch the full making of the demake in the YouTube video above, which was filmed in Barros' native Portuguese. It is also worth noting that Barros confirmed that the demake was currently “more of a stage than a game” and therefore not available for download, but added: “I'll think about” making a full version.
Honestly, as visually impressive as the demake is, I really shudder to think how mind-numbingly difficult this game would be with an N64 controller and the slippery, clunky fifth-gen controls. People who manage to beat games like Silksong are made of sterner stuff than me, but I'm convinced that, saddled with 30 years of control, no one can beat it.
