Former Hole bassist and Smashing pumpkins touring member Melissa Auf der Maur described her first memoirs in detail. called Even Good Girls Will Cry: Rock Memoirs of the 90s, The book will hit shelves next spring, March 17, on the Da Capo label. You can pre-order here.
Described as “part coming-of-age autobiography, part travel diary, part psychedelic album,” the memoir documents the life of the Montreal-raised Canadian musician before her big break touring with the Smashing Pumpkins and joining Hole for the band's 1994 concert. Get over it tour after death Kurt Cobain and replaced Hole's previous bassist, Kristen Plouffe. It also features rare behind-the-scenes photos spanning Auf de Maur's career, which began with her first band, Montreal-based alternative rock band Tinker.
“This book is about the decade that defined me and my generation, 1991–2001, and my life in rock bands, which gave me a front-row seat to an incredibly visceral and unforgettable moment in the counterculture,” Auf der Maur shared in a statement. “This is a love letter to the power of music and the unique voices that make the world a cooler place; it's also an ode to analog and how much magic has been lost. Sharing what our generation has witnessed and what the world once was, in hopes of building a more livable future together.”
The memoir will also feature episodes from Stevie Nicks, Dave Grohl, Rufus Wainwright, Michael Stipe and much more [via Rolling Stone].
On Maura and Courtney Love performed several Hole songs together in 2018 at an event dedicated to Love at the Hudson Basilica, a venue co-founded by Auf der Maur. The latter two reunited in the studio for for the first time in 24 years in June 2024.
