Canada, like a number of other countries, is ready to offer local assistance to Caribbean countries hit hard by the hurricane. Melissa. The Canadian Red Cross is simply waiting for the starting signal to deploy humanitarian aid.

“The Canadian Red Cross is the largest humanitarian network in the world,” says Juliana Bravo, Regional Manager for the Americas Region of the Canadian Red Cross.

At the moment, no command has been sent to the facility. Member countries of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies are waiting to find out what needs local teams cannot meet.

“We sent out an alert throughout our network to see who would be ready to deploy in 72 hours,” explains a Canadian Red Cross spokesperson. “So the work really has to be ready. We're waiting. It's quite a long period, I would say not stressful, because we're all ready to respond, but… we're waiting.”

The Canadian Red Cross has prepared emergency shelter kits, hygiene kits and first aid kits in case these items are needed.

“Canadians, we are valued for our health care capabilities, especially in emergency response. Already on Tuesday, we received two calls from the Federation [avoir] specialists and provide hosting solutions,” explains M.to me Bravo.

The organization has also undertaken numerous exploration and production efforts in recent years. The Canadian Red Cross has established the CERA (Capability Enhancement and Readiness to Action) initiative, which aims to provide national partner societies overseas with opportunities to improve their preparedness and response to natural disasters. Mto me Bravo is convinced that this initiative has made a difference.

“It was better to communicate with the community to tell them, 'Listen, there's a storm coming, we need to get out,'” she says.

“We've been working with the teams for a number of years and we've seen that there's definitely been an improvement in response since this investment. And in the end, it's saving lives,” she says.
