A new security assessment shows that Kodiak Driver, an autonomous system from Kodiak AI, is tied to highest safety score among more than 1,000 commercial fleets driven by human drivers. The score is provided by Nauto, Inc., creators of the Visually Enhanced Risk Assessment or VERA Score. This system uses artificial intelligence to measure fleet safety on a scale of 1 to 100.
The Kodiak driver received a remarkable score of 98. This result puts it among the safest fleets in the global Nauto network. The findings have sparked debate throughout the trucking industry and raised new questions about the role of automation in trucking.

WILL AUTONOMOUS TRUCKS REPLACE DRIVERS BY 2027?

Kodiak Driver Autonomous Truck Safety Assessment Results
Kodiak's VERA rating of 98 corresponded to the highest rating among all fleets assessed. Fleets equipped with Nauto safety technology score an average of 78 points, while fleets without safety technology score just 63.
The Kodiak driver received 100 points for inattentive driving, reckless driving and traffic violations. The lowest score, 95, was for aggressive driving. The VERA score combines more than 20 vision-based AI variables into one clear safety rating.
Nauto found that every 10-point increase in VERA Score reduced the risk of collisions by approximately 21%. A near-perfect score like the Kodiak's represents a significant improvement over typical human performance on the road.
The strong results came as no surprise to Kodiak management. Don Burnett, founder and CEO of Kodiak, told CyberGuy: “Achieving the highest safety score among more than 1,000 commercial fleets in the proprietary Nauto Visually Enhanced Risk Assessment (VERA Score®) safety test is a testament to Kodiak's strong focus on safety. Security is at the core of everything Kodiak creates. Our core value is “safety first and always”. We believe independent safety ratings like Nauto help confirm what we already know: Kodiak Driver is already among the safest drivers on American highways. They also help establish and raise public awareness of how secure our technologies really are.”

The Growing Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Truck Driving Safety
Nauto has equipped the trucks with modern monitoring and hazard detection systems. These tools monitor both the driving environment and vehicle behavior in real time. Eliminating human factors such as distraction, fatigue and reaction delays directly improves safety.
In a company statement, Burnett said the system is “never asleep, never drunk, and always alert.” This constant awareness allows the Kodiak driver to act defensively and predictably, two traits associated with safe driving.
The VERA rating also gives fleets a consistent way to measure safety. Companies can now move from reacting to disruptions to preventing them.
Federal Motor Carrier Security Directorate data support the trend. The number of commercial truck accidents in the United States has dropped from more than 124,000 in 2024 to about 104,000 this year. Fewer crashes mean fewer fatalities and safer highways overall.

Concerns about the safety of autonomous trucks
Not everyone is ready to give up the steering wheel artificial intelligence. Some industry experts note that while systems like Kodiak Driver have performed well in controlled evaluations, real-world roads can still present unpredictable problems. Weather, human drivers and mechanical issues remain challenging variables to autonomous systems manage.
Others are concerned about the impact on jobs. As AI takes on more driving responsibilities, professional drivers are wondering what this shift will mean for employment and pay in the trucking industry.
Safety advocates are also calling for clearer rules and transparency for the public.
Even proponents of the technology agree that ongoing surveillance, testing and gradual adoption are essential. Progress is promising, but trust takes time.
What does this mean for you
If you work in logistics, fleet management or transportation technology, this news will affect you. Kodiak Driver's near-perfect result proves that autonomous systems aren't just catching up with human drivers; they begin to move forward in safety.
Businesses can see big benefits. AI-powered security tools help reduce liability, reduce costs and keep your fleet running smoothly. Technology doesn't require rest breaks or reminders to stay focused, making every mile more efficient.
Regulators are also taking notice. Validated data like this builds confidence and paves the way for safer and more widespread use of autonomous trucks. This is proof that technology can provide real security, not just promise it.
Drivers on everyday roads also benefit. Fewer crashes mean safer highways and more reliable supplies. When trucks drive smarter, everyone shares the reward. Human drivers aren't going anywhere anytime soon, but AI is quickly becoming their most trusted partner. This helps prevent fatigue, distraction, and those risky split-second decisions that land you in trouble.

Kurt's key takeaways
This study marks an important step in redefining what safe driving means. An autonomous system equal to the best human parks signals that automation is moving from theory to reality. However, the shift raises questions. How soon will it be public trust catch up with technology? Can regulations evolve quickly enough to ensure widespread adoption? Will drivers be able to adapt to sharing the road with cars that never get tired or lose focus? What remains certain is that safety innovation is transforming transportation. Autonomous systems like the Kodiak Driver prove that technology and safety can move forward together.
