We could have lived in a world where Hideo Kojima made a Matrix game, if only someone had told him he was offered to make one

Despite being such a video game series, The Matrix series is somewhat surprising that only a handful of actual games were ever released. Obviously, The Matrix Online is the most logical. What other genre besides MMO could The Matrix be? Well, there's also “Enter the Matrix” it's basically Max Paynebut you still have to wonder what else could have been. Moreover, the Wachowskis literally promoted the idea Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima is creating a Matrix game directly for Konami.

Christopher Bergstresser, former vice president of licensing at Konami Digital Entertainment, recently spoke with Time Extension regarding this obvious suggestion, explaining that “the Wachowskis were big fans of Kojima.” He explained: “So Kazumi Kitaue, Kojima, Aki Saito (who still works with Kojima) and I were at Konami headquarters and we got a call from the Wachowskis who wanted to come and meet Kojima. And so they did!”

The pair of directors were in the meeting with their visual effects supervisor and asked if Konami and Kojima would make a Matrix game, to which Kitaue (who later became Konami's CEO) apparently bluntly said, “No.” However, we still managed to enjoy the Japanese premiere of The Matrix and the party afterwards.” But, apparently, according to Kojima himself, he didn’t even know about such a pitch.

After rumors of the Time Extension report spread, Kojima took to his personal English-language Twitter account to say that he was “surprised to see on social media that the Wachowski sisters have 'offered me a Matrix game project!' back in 1999. In all these 26 years, no one has ever told me that such a conversation took place.”

Death The director went on to explain that he remembers meeting with the Wachowskis three times and that they visited Konami headquarters, but Kojima only showed up after the meeting with Kitaue took place. He also remembers attending the Japanese premiere and party, but “even then there was no talk of a proposal.”

It's this moment that will get you thinking about what could have been: “I was already very busy with MGS2 at the time and probably wouldn't have been able to accept the offer right away. But if someone had told me, maybe there would have been a way to make it work.” Alas, now we will never know! This makes me a little sad because I'd love to live in a world where his hypothetical Matrix game reads your browser history to judge you or something, you know, one of those classic Kojima oddball features.
