I particularly like the RIG gaming headsets from Nacon. Similar to GameSir for controllers, RIG often applies very competitive pricing to hardware that punches well above its weight in terms of quality and durability.
Recently launched RIG R5 Spear Pro HS (okay, I really don't like the unwieldy name) is one prime example. This wired gaming headset ticks almost all the boxes I personally look for in a pair of inexpensive headphones: excellent sound quality; comfortable enough for long gaming sessions; powerful microphone for multiplayer online games; and a price that makes me do a double take.
I've liked many of RIG's products in the past, namely the glitter RIG 900 Max HS And RIG 600 Pro HS; Both of these are excellent wireless gaming headsets designed with PlayStation hardware in mind. Being a little older than the R5 Spear Pro, these wireless headsets are likely to be heavily discounted candidates this coming Black Friday.
But there are a number of reasons why I would recommend paying attention to the RIG R5 Spear Pro HS during the sales period, especially if you are buying a gaming headset for modern platforms for the first time.
The price is right
Let's first talk about the retail price of the RIG R5 Spear Pro HS.
At $69.99/£69.99 (about AU$99), it already sits on the border between mid-range and budget-priced. This isn't unusual for wired gaming headsets in general. Razer BlackShark V2 Xfor example costs $59.99/£59.99, while another favorite at HyperX Cloud Alpha the price is slightly higher at $99.99/£89.99.
What's great about these competing headsets a few years after release is that they often come with incredibly attractive discounts that bring the R5 Spear Pro HS's retail price down significantly. So, why should you consider buying a new RIG headset when the competition is likely to be cheaper on Black Friday?
I've used all three headsets extensively at various points in my life: for gaming, work, and listening to music. In all three areas, I can confidently say that the RIG R5 Spear Pro HS is somewhat superior to the other two.
The sound quality is some of the clearest and brightest I've ever experienced on a wired gaming headset, especially at this price point. Nacon hasn't been shy about touting the headset's 40mm graphene drivers, and for good reason. They provide crystal clear sound with minimal distortion or distortion at higher volumes.
The sound overall works much better than the BlackShark V2 X, especially. Despite the excellent build quality, which is typical for Reiser products, this is a headset that “gets the job done” for those who are just looking for something cheap and fun to play online with friends.
There's nothing wrong with that, of course, but the overall audio quality of the R5 Spear Pro HS is much better – whether you're playing online multiplayer or immersing yourself in stellar single-player adventures.
Head and shoulders above
Comfort and customization are two other strong points of the R5 Spear Pro HS. The earcups and headband of the headset use comfortable, soft materials that are designed for long periods of gaming. I generally prefer it to cheap leatherette as it doesn't chafe as much and doesn't get as hot over long periods of use.
You can also personalize the headset with official magnetic plates. They're sold separately, but allow you to swap out the standard (included) PlayStation-centric models for something more customizable. I'm a particularly big fan of EVO's tournament design, as I particularly enjoy fighting games as my favorite competitive genre.
One sticking point you may have with the R5 Spear Pro is that it is strictly a wired headset. However, for me this is not such a big problem. The wired option means the headset is completely platform independent, which is less common with wireless headsets due to special connection requirements. Having a wired connection means the R5 Spear Pro works on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, PC and most other devices with a 3.5mm headphone jack.
While you might be tempted to buy other wired gaming headsets on Black Friday if they go on sale, I think you should keep an eye out for deals on the RIG R5 Spear Pro HS. The price drop here probably won't be as steep as the competition given its relative newness (probably around 10-20% highs), but if it drops below the $60/£60 mark during the sales period, I'll almost certainly write about it during Black Friday week.
