Last week, the federal government said it was limiting the number of vehicles Stellantis and General Motors could import duty-free after both companies scaled back their operations in Canada.

Ottawa announced it was cutting the remission quota for GM by 24 per cent and for Stellantis by 50 per cent.

Noting that the company is offering transfer options to workers, Hines said Stellantis wants to find a solution that provides laid-off workers in Brampton with “long-term, sustainable employment.”

The Brampton plant, which has been closed since early 2024 to prepare for a new production line, employed about 3,000 people before the closure.
