Samsung’s Wild-Looking Tri-Fold Phone Debuts at APEC Summit in South Korea

Samsung unveiled its first triple-display foldable phone for consumers at the Technology Showroom during the APEC CEO Summit in South Korea. Korean edition Dailian reported that the new phone will be launched in November or December.

The triple phone, which does not yet have an official name, was presented at the exhibition as a prototype. Taking into account that Galaxy Z-fold 7 And Galaxy Z Flip 7 By folding one hinge in half, the next Samsung device folds in two places to become as compact as a regular smartphone with a 6.5-inch external screen, then unfolds to form a tablet-sized 10-inch screen. Joseon Daily. Compare this to dual-screen foldable devices, which have internal screens that measure around 8 inches. The Z Fold 7 has a single fold on the home screen; the new triple fold may have two folds.

Samsung has been at the forefront of foldable phones since its release first Galaxy Fold in 2019 and Galaxy Z flip in 2020. At the time, it faced stiff competition from Motorola and Huawei, the latter of which would take a significant lead in 2024 with its own triple folding Huawei Mate XTfollowed by second version. The launch of Samsung's own competitor keeps the company in the game.

These two consumer tees have their differences. The Huawei Mate XT's two hinges fold in opposite directions like an accordion, giving it a Z shape, while the Samsung device has two screens that fold inward, which Dailian claims (via Google Translate) to be “G-shaped.” Considering that Samsung branded its foldable lineup as the Z-series, it's ironic that the company didn't adopt this shape and format for its tri-fold.

Samsung hasn't revealed any details about its tri-fold device, although Dilian expects it to be even more expensive than the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which starts at $2,000 in the US. In photographs of the device – apparently a prototype – the front camera is visible behind the glass on the internal display (unfolded) and the external screen (folded). But since Samsung hasn't shown off the foldable device either, there are a lot of questions raised about its durability and performance ahead of its supposed launch in a month or two.

It's no surprise that Samsung's triple foldable phone is ready to go. Over the years, the company has demonstrated various flexible display designs, including three-screen formatsduring CES. Over the past few months there has been stable flow of rumors and frank executive confirmations that Samsung is preparing to introduce its triple smartphone. Now we'll have to see if the company that has fought so hard to be at the forefront of smartphone design can release yet another format that dominates the foldable phone niche – all before one of its biggest competitors, Apple, even releases its first folding.
