Samsung makes ads on $3,499 smart fridges official with upcoming software update

After the start of the unpopular pilot test last month, This week, Samsung officially introduced the practice of displaying advertising on its expensive smart refrigerators.

The advertisement will be shown on Samsung Family Hub 2024 smart refrigerators. At the time of writing this article, the recommended retail price for Samsung Family Hub refrigerators ranged from From 1899 to 3499 US dollars. The ads will appear in a software update that Samsung will begin rolling out this month and will appear on the refrigerator's built-in 21.5- or 32-inch (depending on model) screen. The ads will run when refrigerators are idle and display what Samsung calls protective screens.

As part of the Family Hub software update, we are testing a new widget for select Family Hub refrigerator cover themes. The widget will display useful everyday information such as news, calendar and weather forecasts, as well as carefully selected advertisements.

Samsung also said its refrigerators will only show contextual ads, not personalized ads that rely on collecting user data.

Edge reported that the widget will appear as a rectangular box at the bottom of the screens. The post says the window will change what it displays “every 10 seconds.”

The software update will also introduce “a Daily Board theme that offers a new way to quickly view useful information,” Samsung said. The Verge reported that the feature will also include ads, something Samsung didn't mention. The Daily Board theme will show five tiles with information such as appointments and weather, as well as one tile with advertisements.
