The 38-year-old man was shot on October 15 at his Ottawa flophouse and finally died from serious injuries on October 24. It was included in the book as the 17th murder in the capital in 2025.

When I was at the police desk in That Ottawa Sun three decades ago we were like Maytag's repairmen. It was a rare case when the people got out of control: only one murder was committed per month.

SOFTNESS ON CRIME

So, you will look for connections, no matter how uncertain they may be, especially on weekends. I once wrote that the late Outlaws president Taco Bowman, who was on the run from virtually everyone at the time, might be hiding in Canada.

That was then. Like the rest of the country, the nation's capital has suffered over the past decade from rampant crime and indifference to the political and bureaucratic class.

And murders touch all bases.

Joshua Kiyuk, 21 years old, was a hard-working Algonquin College student who dreamed of becoming a chef and was called “sweetheart” by his colleagues. Not enough. He was found stabbed to death in the East End on October 22.

STORE ROBES INCREASED BY 384%

On Monday, the Ottawa Police Service reported a staggering increase in crime between 2015 and 2024. These years, of course, have been “salad days” for Justin Trudeau’s soft-on-crime regime.

According to CTV News, between Trudeau's election and 2024, there was a shocking 63% increase in criminal offences. Even more alarming, violent crime was up 58%, with 8,200 offenses, while property crimes were up 64%, with 35,800 offenses.

Shoplifting? Compared to 2015, this figure has increased by a staggering 384%. Harm alone was down 13%, and that's likely only because police charged only a small number of those shouting “Death to Jews” and “Death to Canada” on the streets in the past two years.

Police Chief Eric Stubbs pointed to organized criminals targeting jewelry stores or high-end perfume aisles in big box stores, teenagers stealing during lunch breaks, people who can't afford food. There was also population growth (hi Justin!) and a pandemic.

CORRIDOR GASES

“Some businesses said they were hesitant to call police because of the time it takes to file reports, while others emphasized the value of proactive measures and direct interaction with officers,” Stubbs wrote in the report.

Elsewhere, the document echoes police chiefs and union leaders across the country: sick leave is up 34%, sick leave is up 226% (Hello, Gaza!), and absenteeism is up 3%. The number of calls to the police increased by 11%.

Cleaning speed? 26%, which is 10 points lower than in 2015.

It is unlikely that the criminal justice philosophy that brought us to this point has weakened one iota in the corridors of power.

NO ZOOMING (LOL!)

In late August, the reliably anti-cop CBC took on the case to make sure that the criminals and their defenders, activists and academic allies missed the mark. Violent crime? What violent crime?

Housing, the environment and other progressive wish list issues were angrily proposed in lieu of police budget increases. Haven't the feds spent millions of dollars on green initiatives that have accomplished nothing except stopping Ghanaians from pooping on their beaches and lining the pockets of the liberal-friendly green industry?

However, Angela Keller-Herzog from Community Associations for Environmental Sustainability said: CBC News What, Reallycrime has decreased.

“We are not seeing a sharp increase in crime,” she told state television with a straight face. “If anything, the trend is downward.”

And this is the view from Ottawa.

One that is unlikely to be shared by the families of Nelson Getson or Joshua Kiyuk. Or the rest of us, for that matter.
