RedState's Brad Slager previously wrote about how New York City Democratic Socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani told a story about his aunt and how she was allegedly afraid to get on the New York City subway after the 9/11 terrorist attacks began to fall apart.
In a speech last Friday about what he called “Islamophobia,” Mamdani said he wanted to “talk to the memory of my aunt who stopped riding the subway after 9/11 because she didn't feel safe in her hijab.”
But, as Slager noted, Internet detectives learned more about Masooma Mamdaniwho is actually the only living aunt of the Assemblyman. “IN biographies of his aunt onlineshe was not seen wearing a headdress,” Brad wrote. “But more than that, her professional career shows she was a resident of Tanzania in the years before and after the terrorist attacks.”

Adding to this story: Mamdani, after being questioned about the inconsistencies, now says it was his father's late cousin, of whom he was referring:
“I was talking about Zehra Fouhi, my father's cousin, who passed away a few years ago,” Mamdani told reporters about the relative he said he affectionately called his aunt.
Fuhi means Paternal Aunt in Urdu and Hindi.
The “aunt” who Zohran Mamdani said was too afraid to wear a hijab on the subway after 9/11 is actually a deceased distant relative, he clarified Monday.

Riiiiight. Seems like a pretty important detail to get wrong, doesn't it?
I think this is a very important detail; you can't go wrong with a beloved family member. https://t.co/4LQBCW8HYs

Incredibly, Mamdani then tried to imply that critics who raised the issue, including his main mayoral opponent, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), were engaging in Islamophobia by questioning his history:
“The takeaways from my 10-plus minute speech on Islamophobia in this race and in this city, if that's my aunt's question, tell you everything you need to know about Cuomo and his failure to address the crisis of his own making,” he said.

Simply incredible. Mamdani can repeatedly question Cuomo on how many mosque visits he did or didn't make as governor, can share laughs and boast meeting with unindicted accomplice of the 1993 World Trade Center bombings (who is involved in Mamdani's election campaign), but if you turn the questions to him, you're an Islamophobe or something.
I hope I'm wrong, but it seems to me that New York is headed down an extremely dark path under Mamdani's leadership, despite many red flags. As the old saying goes, you can lead a horse to water…
