Telecom workers fight for jobs and national security – Steelworkers – The Canadian Business Journal

TORONTO, Oct. 27, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — More than 100 telecom workers will lose their Ericsson jobs on Friday, Oct. 31, when the company moves those jobs to India in the midst of workers' efforts to secure job security through union representation.

“Right now, the government is abandoning the workers who run our communications network. Doug Ford must intervene now, before October 31… Let's stop the layoffs and protect good jobs,” said Marit Stiles, leader of the Official Opposition.

“These jobs are being moved overseas at the expense of our workers, and at the expense of the security of our province and our country. This is about giving up control of the very technology that keeps us connected,” said Laura Walton, president of the Ontario Federation of Labor (OFL).

“This is not only a disruption to our economy, but to our privacy and our national security. Unlike the closure of Stellantis in Brampton, these jobs are not being taken from us due to coercion from other countries; we are giving these jobs away. This is a problem created in Canada and it can be solved through government action,” said Michael Phillips, president of the National Steelworkers Union. (USW) in 1944.

Ericsson technicians operate and maintain Rogers' internal wireless network infrastructure. During the unionization campaign, Ericsson announced that these workers would be laid off and their jobs would be moved to India.

To make matters worse, telecommunications jobs are regulated at the federal level. However, when USW Local 1944 applied at the federal level to represent these workers as their union, Ericsson opposed the application, arguing that the workers were under provincial jurisdiction.

Today in Question Period, Jamie West, Member of Parliament for Sudbury and Shadow Minister of Labor, asked Ontario Premier Doug Ford to urge Ericsson and Rogers to protect these workers and their jobs before it is too late.
