Aroldis Chapman was an important part of the New York Yankees' resurgence in the late 2010s as he was the man the team called out of the bullpen to close out games.
But Chapman's failure to shut out the Houston Astros in the 2019 American League Championship Series will forever be etched in the minds of players. Yankees fans. It's unlikely they'll want to bring him back to the bullpen, despite his comments on Monday.

The two-time World Series champion said “Swing Complete” podcast in Spanish about how he would “retire immediately” if he was traded back to the Yankees.
“No way. Not even dead,” he said via New York Post. “If they told me that I was being sold to New York, I would pack my things and go home. If this happens, I will resign immediately. I'm not crazy. Never again.”

Chapman explained that he felt “a lot of disrespect” playing in the Bronx. He said he got along with the players and coach Aaron Boone, but had problems with the way the “bosses” ran things.
“I got along well with all the players, I never had any problems with anyone, not even the coach. We’re friends, we talk and everything,” he said. “These decisions are made by the bosses.”
He pitched for the Yankees from 2017 to 2022.

Chapman won the World Series with Texas Rangers in 2023. He pitched for the Boston Red Sox in 2025. He had a 1.17 ERA with 85 strikeouts.
He will turn 38 until the 2026 season begins.
