Of the many creatives whose homes or workplaces were damaged by the Los Angeles fires earlier this year, Dawes were particularly affected. To raise money to rebuild the community, the band announced an all-star benefit concert on the first anniversary of the bushfires that destroyed more than 40,000 acres.
Scheduled for January 7 at the Pasadena Community Center in Pasadena, a “Concert for Altadena” named after a community that has been hit hard, Dawes will be joined by a wide range of fellow musicians: including Brad Paisley, Brandon Flowers of The Killers, Stephen Stills, Jackson Browne, Mandy Moore, Aloe Blacc and Jenny Lewis. Alternative rock veterans Everclear and the multi-genre band Ozomatli will also play their sets.
Proceeds will go to the Altadena Builds Back Foundation, part of the Pasadena Community Foundation. “It’s going to be a tough night,” the band said in a statement, “but it’s also going to be a great night.” Additional guests on the show may be announced in the near future.
After the fires started, Griffin Goldsmith of Dawes lost his home in Altadena, and his brother Taylor's home studio and much of the band's equipment were destroyed in the same area. Shortly after, Dawes teamed up with Paisley (along with Sheryl Crow, Brittany Howard, John Legend and St. Vincent) at the Grammy Awards. for the cover Randy Newman's song “I Love Los Angeles” honors the destroyed city.
