Michael Bublé says his family was shocked when they first heard his singing voice.
The “Sway” singer recalled the moment while speaking with Willie Geist on the October 26 episode of Sunday Sitdown. Buble said that one Christmas Eve when he was 13 years old, he was sitting in the backseat of the family car, returning from his grandparents' house.
“We sang, I think it was, 'I dream of a white Christmas / with every Christmas card I write.' And suddenly I said: “May your days be merry and bright.” And, you know, the whole car was screaming: “What the hell?” – he said with a laugh.
Bublé then began to take singing more seriously. While singing at a wedding in 2000, producer David Foster noticed him and signed him to a contract.
Bublé achieved success with his debut studio album, Michael Bublé, which he released in 2003. The album included hits such as “Sway”, “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” and “Kissing a Fool”.
“My hit songs had me sitting at the piano,” he said. “What would take the average pianist a few seconds, but would take me hours to say, 'I don't know why you think you can hold me down.'
He now has over 16 million monthly listeners on Spotify. One famous fan? Baseball star Shohei Ohtani.
The Los Angeles Dodgers star, who is currently playing against the Toronto Blue Jays with his team in the World Series, used Buble's song “Feeling Good” as his farewell song.
Bublé explained that it was Ohtani's wife who told her husband that he should take the field to this song.
“The Dodgers coach was kind enough to introduce me to Shohei. And I told him, “Why did you choose my song?” And very quickly he just turned to his wife, and it was his wife who made the choice,” Bublé laughed. “I'll take it.”
The five-time Grammy winner is gearing up for the next season of his life. Working as a coach on The Voice, he says he'll be releasing new music soon, just in time for the holidays.
Buble admits that he used to not want to be known only for his holiday songs. Then his son Noah was diagnosed with cancer at 3 years old. In addition to Noah, who is now 12 years old and in remission, Bublé has children Elias, Vida and Cielo with wife Luisana Lopilato.
“I don’t know why, but that day I had the clearest epiphany. And I remember thinking, “Why did I even bother with anything else?” – Bublé said. “And from that day on, I never felt the same again.”
