New Orleans Saints were looking for a spark during their eventual 23-3 Week 8 loss to the team. Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In the third quarter, the first-year coach Kellen Moore decided to leave the defender on the bench Spencer Rattler for a beginner Tyler Shaw.
Rattler completed 15 of 21 passes for 136 yards and one interception before being removed. Schoof came in and completed 17 of 30 passes for 128 yards and one interception in his first extended game in the NFL.
“We just had to find a way to create something offensively.” Moore talked about Rattler's bench after the game.. “It has more to do with the offense in general. We're just not executing or playing at a high enough level and we need to find a way to consistently move the ball, defend it and score points. This is purely a full assessment of the attack. We simply don't exist.”
So, is Moore ready to make a complete QB change?
“I think we just need to evaluate all of this over the next 48 hours offensively and find solutions that give us the best chance to win,” Moore said. “Tyler came in there and looked at his role, he made a few plays, had one interception that was bad, gave us a chance to convert there, and so we'll obviously quickly make that assessment here and make some decisions down the line.
Shaw, who lost a preseason quarterback battle with Rattler, was selected 40th overall by the Saints in the 2025 draft. NFL Draft. The Louisville product completed 62.7 percent of his passes for 3,195 yards, 23 touchdowns and six interceptions last season and left college with a 21-11 career record as a starter at Louisville, Texas Tech and Oregon.
Despite being a rookie, Shaw turned 26 last month. He was one of the more controversial prospects in the last draft, with one current NFL head coach reportedly believing Shaw was best defender in the entire draft.
The Saints offense ranks 27th in the NFL with 295 total yards of offense per game, while New Orleans' average of 16 points per game ranks 29th. It's clear the Saints have problems on offense, but it remains to be seen whether Moore believes a change at quarterback will be enough to get this team back on track.
