Floods trap people in cars in Spain’s Catalonia region

Floods caused by heavy rains have left several people trapped in vehicles in Spain's northeastern Catalonia region, officials said.

Videos have appeared on social networks showing how streams of muddy water sweep through the cities of La Rapita and Santa Barbara in the province of Tarragona and sweep away everything in its path.

Spain's national meteorological agency AEMET has issued the highest red alert for the coastal province.

There have been no reports of deaths or injuries yet.

Catalonia's civil protection agency urged residents of Tarragona's Ebro delta to stay at home as AEMET warned of 180mm (7 inches) of rain in the area in 12 hours.

“The situation is difficult and more rain is forecast,” La Vanguardia newspaper quoted Cristina Vicente, a senior agency official, as saying.

Train services from the cities of Barcelona and Valencia in the neighboring Valencia region have been suspended until further notice on the predominantly coastal Mediterranean corridor.

Several regions in southeastern Spain, including the Balearic Islands, have been hit by heavy rain and flooding in recent days.

The severe weather was caused by Storm Alice. in the western Mediterranean.
