Hundreds of volunteers worked hard to install memorials as part of the annual Field of Crosses memorial along Memorial Road on Saturday. Now in its 16th year, the event aims to raise awareness of the men and women from Southern Alberta who have died while serving in the Canadian Armed Forces.
From October 27 to November 11, approximately 2,000 Calgary school students were expected to walk along rows of white crosses emblazoned with the names of the fallen as part of the Classroom at the Crosses program. But due to the teachers' strike, this experiment was suspended.

“We understand the challenges Alberta teachers face and deeply value the relationships we have built with them over the years,” said John C. Adams, President of Valor Canada. “Our mission to educate young people about Canada's military heritage continues, and we are taking steps to ensure that opportunities for learning and remembrance are not lost.”
To ensure students have the opportunity to participate in Field of Crosses, Valor Canada is offering flexible rescheduling beyond the end of the teachers' strike and has expanded its daytime classes to include community youth groups, private schools and homeschooling organizations.
Anyone can meet with teachers at the Calgary Curling Club from Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 15:00. For those unable to attend in person, online options will also be available.
