- iPhone 18 could get a RAM upgrade
- It may come with 12GB of RAM, just like other iPhones.
- More RAM means better support for AI features
Of the four iPhones that Apple launched last month, iPhone 17 stands apart with 8 GB of RAM – all others have 12 GB. According to a new rumor, this will change with the release of the iPhone 18 next year.
This is from a South Korean store. Bell (by using McRumors), and the report says that Apple's regular RAM supplier Samsung it was proposed to increase the number of modules available for production in 2026.
A 50% increase in RAM is a significant increase in RAM for the iPhone 18, but it makes sense that Apple would want to upgrade this feature: we know AI needs as much memory space as it can get, and no doubt we'll get more. Apple Intelligence improvements next year.
Apple's iPhone still lags behind Android phones overall when it comes to RAM. Samsung Galaxy S25 for example, has 12GB of RAM, but can often compensate for this with the power of its mobile chipsets and software optimizations.
Recent RAM upgrades
The base iPhone has had 8GB of RAM since the iPhone 16 launched in 2024, and before that the iPhone 15 made do with 6GB – so Apple Intelligence only works on iPhone 15 pro and Pro Max from this series of phones.
All iPhone 16 models have 8GB of RAM, so this year alone the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max moved to 12GB. The iPhone Air also runs on 12GB of RAM and uses the same A19 Pro chip as the Pro models (the iPhone 17 uses the standard A19).
Of course, this also impacts performance and price, so it will be interesting to see how Apple decides to differentiate between the various iPhone 18 phones if this key feature is the same for all of them.
So far we haven't heard too many rumors and leaks around the iPhone 18, although there are there was a conversation full 5G satellite communications, and can also be significant camera update for Pro and Pro Max models.
