Hausse des tarifs douaniers sur le Canada: «Il ne faut pas être surpris», estime un professeur en droit

Donald Trump's announcement of a 10 per cent tariff hike on Canadian imports in response to an Ontario government ad was predictable, according to a management and law professor at the University of Ottawa.

“We should not be surprised to see that he imposed an additional tariff of 10% on us, as if he wanted to punish us for allowing us to do what is our right to expression in Canadian society,” Mr. explained.e Gilles Levasseur in an interview with LCN.

Me Levasseur clarifies that the Carney government must be sensitive so as not to offend the American president in order to negotiate between the two countries.

“We have to be careful not to do too much, because we will have a reaction that will often make it impossible to negotiate with the United States,” he stressed.

A University of Ottawa professor says the main problem with the Ontario government's advertising is its criticism of Donald Trump's tariff policies.

“We should rather say that we are partners, that we are able to work together, that we have a positive message, because that is what Americans like to hear,” Mr. said.e Gilles Levasseur.

According to him, the American president is sending a signal to other countries by introducing increased customs tariffs in Canada.

“This is a way to send a message not only to Canadians, but to everyone who interacts with the United States,” concluded Mr.e Levasseur.
