The East Wing of the White House was demolished this week to make way for a new $300 million ballroom. Discussion participants joined Washington Week with The Atlantic to discuss what powers Donald Trump might have to dismantle the historical structure.
“People have a lot of memories there,” Toluse Olorunnipa, Staff Writer Atlantic– said last night. “To see it defaced and dismantled in three days was really shocking to the conscience of a lot of people, especially those who worked there.”
Olorunipa also added that “for people who admire Washington, who admire the presidency, who admire the White House, this is a sign that this president is not doing anything like previous presidents. He does it his way, and he does it in a way that ignores the idea that checks and balances actually work.”
I join the editor-in-chief AtlanticJeffrey Goldberg to discuss this and more: Peter Baker, Chief White House Correspondent New York Times; Susan Glasser, magazine staff writer New Yorker; David Ignatius, foreign affairs columnist at Washington Post; And Toluse Olorunnipa, Staff Writer Atlantic.
