The Scariest Thing in Video Games Are the Bugs

Games filled with bugs are scary!

The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer. It's that time of year when the horror genre dominates pop culture; when audiences watch movies with bated breath and bold, suspenseful games. While many releases deliver cleverly crafted scares, I'm more interested in the misguided execution. After all, sometimes the scariest thing in a video game isn't the monsters, it's the bugs!

Trigger nightmares

Cyberpunk 2077

Following the release of one of the greatest games in the genre, hype for Cyberpunk 2077 was at an all-time high. However, when the sci-fi epic was released, it was riddled with bugs and atrocities that quickly turned the gritty, neon-drenched world into a twisted nightmare.

Fallout: New Vegas

As great as the series is, the Fallout games are full of glitches, often with hilarious results. New Vegas, arguably the best game, was plagued with problems, every step was a trial as you never knew when the game would crash and you'd lose your progress. Terrible.

Assassin's Creed: Unity

Ubisoft's iconic series had just released the critically acclaimed Black Flag, and fans were hungry for a true next-gen game that would showcase the power of modern consoles. Instead, they ended up with a title riddled with bugs: kills that sent body parts flying into the sky, and the infamous “faceless” glitch where characters loaded with only floating eyes and teeth, like creatures straight out of a George A. Romero film.

Alarming glitches

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Bethesda games are known for having a lot of bugs, and Skyrim is no exception. While there are many to choose from, one of the most disturbing are mannequins. These strange, lifeless figures are scattered throughout your home, but from time to time they change their position or suddenly appear behind you, turning your cozy home into a creepy maze where you will never feel truly safe.

WWE 2K20

Unfinished and broken, WWE 2K20 is a wrestling fan's nightmare. Superstars fall through the cracks and gameplay is a bug-infested mess. While it's a lot of fun, it's also very frustrating to see your favorite wrestler turn into a disgusting monster.

Sims

The simulation series has dominated the genre since its inception. At its core, it is a wholesome game that allows you to guide your family through the complexities of life; however, the abundance of glitches makes this a heartbreaking game that will leave you with nightmares. From Slender Man-like characters to babies with missing eyes, the glitches are constantly changing, making the game creepy every time you play.

Red Dead Redemption

A classic game with impeccable storytelling contains a horrific bug. There is a certain vulnerability in the Wild West: there may be bandits, animals and many dangers that require you to be on your guard. However, no one could have predicted the terrible “animals” that live in the open air. Hilarious, but weird as hell, these hybrid creatures can be seen hiding in the bushes and sometimes even flying through the sky!

Well, here it is! If you're spooked by another species this Halloween, skip the scary movies because these terrifying bugs will do the trick. Who needs zombies if you accidentally got nightmare fuel?
