Blue Jays fans loudly boo Shohei Ohtani at Rogers Centre in Game 1

Fans at Rogers Center in Toronto loudly booed the Dodgers superstar. Shohei Ohtani before Game 1 of the World Series on Friday.

While fans often jeer opposing players during pregame lineups, the whistle that serenaded Ohtani was uniquely loud compared to what he Dodgers teammates.

Ohtani also didn't quiet the crowd when he made his first out of the game, striking out to start the first inning.

When Ohtani became a free agent in the winter of 2023, he visited the Blue Jays as a prospect before signing with the Dodgers.

The Blue Jays gave Ohtani a hat and jacket for Dekoy, Ohtani's dog. Blue Jays manager John Schneider joked that he wanted both of those gifts back.

“I hope he brought his hat, the Blue Jay hat that he took from us at our meeting. I hope he finally brought it back,” Schneider said Thursday.

“And a jacket for Decoy,” he added. “It’s something like: “Give us our things already.”

Ohtani smiled when he heard of Schneider's remarks and simply said through an interpreter: “It's in my garage.”

Blue Jays The manager said he was unsure how close the team came to signing the Japanese superstar.

“When we met with him, you liked it and you liked what he gave about our organization and the opportunities here,” Schneider said.

“But you never really know how a player feels in free agency, and there are a lot of things that have to go with him personally as well. So you can't really think about what if. You think about the 26 (players) we have.”
