Microsoft is currently testing a new AI assistant for Copilot called Mico.
Named after Microsoft and Copilot, Mico is an amorphous blob that responds to your requests by changing shape and color accordingly. The company says it's all designed to create a virtual companion that feels “expressive, customizable and warm.”
This assistant immediately brings to mind Clippy, Microsoft's old Office Assistant. At this point, Jacob Andreu, Microsoft's corporate vice president of products and artificial intelligence, joked Edge that Clippy walked so Miko could run.” Some of those who tested Mico also found you can briefly turn it into Clippy with repeated clicks. (Of course, Clippy felt much more harmless, since he did not arrive at a time when Microsoft was absorbing many of its businesses. especially XboxV mad pursuit of AIbut alas.)
Microsoft says it also plans to add a “Learn Live” mode to Mico, which will turn it into a “voice-controlled Socratic teacher that walks you through concepts rather than just giving you answers.” Overall, the company says it wants Mico to show how “AI can be helpful, supportive and deeply personal.”
Mico is set to launch at some point in Canada, the US and the UK. Mico will be enabled by default in Copilot, although there will be an option to turn it off.
